When Hurricane Maria wiped out the entire power grid in Puerto Rico, a group of social entrepreneurs and filmmakers including actor John Leguizamo, Director Doug Liman, Producer Avram Ludwig and social entrepreneurs Liz Hamburg and Fredric King got together to bring solar lamps to fellow citizens in Puerto Rico through a crowdfunding campaign Solar4PR.
Solight Design's Solar Puffs are lightweight, collapsible lamps powered by sunlight, designed to charge within hours and for a $13 donation, will provide a family with up to 12 hours of light for with each charge. The lamps are made of recyclable materials. The E.Lumen Flashlights and E.FLEX10 Portable Solar Panels designed by Renogy are small, durable, and functional - perfect for Fire, Police and Emergency workers.
On Friday September 22nd, just a few days after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, Liz Hamburg reached out to filmmakers and pilots Doug Liman and Avram Ludwig to see if they could find pilots to help fly solar lights down to Puerto Rico. Corporate lawyer and pilot George Sampas quickly volunteered to donate his plane to fly the lights to Puerto Rico personally.
Within 24 hours, actor John Leguizamo, preparing for a new Broadway show, was on board to do a promotional video and spread the word to his network. Filmmaker and social entrepreneur Fredric King, on the board of Studio Unite, a nonprofit which has delivered over 20,000 Solight solar lamps to disaster areas in Haiti, Nepal and to Syrian refugees, committed to source and distribute the lights.
Over 1,000 people contributed to the campaign, donating everything from $10 to over $1,000 each. Many donors wrote encouraging comments to the people of Puerto Rico:
“May this light be of help. We are thinking of you, fellow brothers and sisters and are sending love and strength.”
“We care! You're not alone.”
“May this go to help my family whom we still haven't heard from. God be with you.”
“This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine”
“Shine on, Puerto Rico.”
Para mi gente..... may the light shine :”)
“I wish i could give more but i am currently unemployed”
Solar4PR will continue to fundraise to send additional lights to Puerto Rico in the coming weeks.
