Every year, many immigrants come to settle down in the United States, and many of them came without good English skill, especially the adults. Most adults face hard time in learning a second language, besides struggling to adapt with the new culture and the new environment, as adults do not have the capacity as big as growing kids have to learn new things.
Being a non-native speaker in America myself, I felt inspired to document the stories of the adults having to learn English at not a very young age - not because they like to do it, but rather for the sake of survival in a new place. The process of learning a new language is never simple as it requires people to also unlearn many things from their culture in order to 'make sense' of the new reality surrounding them. Learning language in a new place is about adaptation - and adaptation comes with a lot of hard work and effort, and also sacrifice.
This is a documentary project about stories and experiences of adults learning English as a second language around Western Massachusetts, while trying to assimilate themselves with the new environment.
