On May 10, 2011, enough presbyteries in the PC(USA) voted in favor of a consitutional change to eliminate language that has long kept sisters and brothers who were LGBT from serving as Deacons, Elders, and ministers. It has been a long struggle for justice, over 30 years. As one might imagine, those years took their toll on many, often forcing people willing to serve to seek other churches, families to choose between church and children who were LGBT, and there were other consequences. Now, after years that are the signature of any justice movement, the PC(USA) joins the ELCA, Episcopal, MCC, and United Church of Christ in welcoming its sisters and brothers who are LGBT. More, this opens church to the LGBT community, while standing squarely against marginalization, exclusion, and any violence towards the wonderful creative diversity of God in our midst.
