The Great Southern Brood periodical cicadas are emerging across the Southeastern United States. This is a series of over 1500 digital still photographs taken over a seven and a half hour period on May 10, 2011, in Durham, North Carolina. Shown is a cicada nymph shedding its exoskeleton as it transforms to its adult stage.
