Archive film meets virtual world, from mechanical reproduction to digital arts. An audiovisual essay exploring how the view of the Arctic is both the same and different across media and across time.
The archive film is 'The Great Northern Sea Route'. Made in the USSR in 1947, it relates the endeavour as part of the five year plan to reopen the northern sea route through the Arctic after the Second World War (Public domain: archive.org/details/gov.archives.arc.44539).
The virtual world material was filmed at Khodovarikha (maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Porter%20Islands/78/181/22), a Second Life reconstruction of the place of the same name on the Barents Sea coast. Both show a fascination in different lands and people.
Selected for Creative Reactions, art meets science, as part of the Pint of Science Festival. Online, with main event streamed online 17-20 May 2021.
