We’ve got a thing for rooftop parties and giving when giving is due, so when we found out about We Are Alabama: An Evening to Help the Victims of the Recent Storm fundraiser this week, we couldn’t say no. The swanky soirée was hosted by a network of DC transplants with Alabama roots—many of whom saw their friends’ and family’s lives uprooted in wake of the powerful tornado that tore through the state late last month, leaving thousands homeless around Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. It was an unusual scene in city that’s often defined by its differences: Left-leaning liberals reached across the aisle to join forces with staunch conservatives, low-level staffers hobnobbed with K Street power brokers, and corporate titans swayed to live bluegrass music—all In the name of helping fund the state’s relief efforts. In the end, nearly 500 guests help raise more than $350,000 for the American Red Cross and other agencies. Here’s the party as we saw it.
