In June 2009, Heather Metcalfe of Artfully Unforgotten visited Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan to better understand the status of women. While there she interviewed women of all ages and heard stories of oppression, violence and resilience. What was most telling though, was that every woman she met had "hope" for the future of Afghanistan, as well as for the lives of women across the country. This is an aspect that is often not mentioned in today's media coverage over the war in Afghanistan.
Ferishta, is a twenty-eight year old mother, who returned to Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban with nothing, has one such story. She is a mother and business owner, who works to help others in need come out of poverty, while demonstrating the contributions that women can bring in rebuilding a country at war.
