The most important verse in our passage this morning is vs. 24. In referring to the cup, Jesus says, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many." The two most important words in our most important verse are "for many." The prepositional phrase, "for many," denotes substitution. What Christ would do on the Cross, He did "for" or "in place of" many! When we take the Lord's Supper together as brothers and sisters in Christ, we are celebrating Christ's death in our place! This is our ONLY hope and the reason for our rescue from sin and death! Christ paid the price (for our sin, guilt and shame) in our place! He bore the wrath of God against our sinfulness FOR US! O, what a wonderful Savior! This celebratory meal that we take together says it all for God's people today: "forgiven and made free to follow the King!"
