In the fight against air pollution, poultry manure doesn’t immediately spring to mind as a pollutant.
However, it contains harmful elements that contribute to poor air quality. Each year, manure disposal causes 25 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU; the equivalent of 19 coal-fired power plants.
In Italy, the Chimera Project, supported by the EU's LIFE programme, is taking a circular approach to the problem of manure disposal. The project treats the substance in a sustainable way to limit harmful fumes. Even the by-products of the process, such as heat and liquid, can be reused on poultry farms.
The Chimera Project expects to treat 1,500 tonnes of manure each year in order to help improve the quality of the air we breathe.
