The EU's LIFE programme has been supporting initiatives on both regional and national levels to improve air quality across the European Union.
They range from CLINSH, a pan-European drive to reduce the environmental impact of inland shipping in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and Germany, to the Chimera Project in Italy, which aims to sustainably treat poultry manure – a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions.
Many of the initiatives also directly involve citizens, like the air quality plan in the Małopolska region in south-east Poland. It provides the funding for local residents to replace their coal and wood boilers with energy efficient heating systems.
These examples show that there are workable ways to improve air quality that already in place in diverse sectors all over Europe.
