The clouds hold in sound.
Hold it down. A wood pigeon croons
with the chuck of a pheasant.
Up the valley a sheep blahs.
Fine rain makes no noise, no drips,
and the stream over the pebbles, under the bridge
is background dribble
to a high up plane’s faint shhh.
The kitchen clock marks time’s neat click.
I sneeze three times. A letter?
Four. Something better? A cow complains.
A crow caws back.
Mmmmmm. Says the fridge
to the rumble of another plane.
My inner ear can now hear
the weight of hush.
