The Misanthrope by Molière
The CISPA 3rd Year present Molière’s arguably most sophisticated comedy, which is not only a hilarious comedy of manners, but also a profound study of the nature of misanthropy.
Our eponymous antihero, Alceste, loathes the hypocrisy and affectations of society and seizes any opportunity to rail against everybody that doesn’t live up to his high standards of brutal honesty.
If he can’t eradicate the hypocrisy of the people around him, he’ll rather spurn them all and exile himself from humanity.
The problem is that, in spite of himself, he’s in love with the happy-go-lucky Célimène, who is not blind to Alceste’s passions, but also wants to entertain the company of other men, not least the flamboyant fop, Acaste, who happens to be the worst sonnet writer in France. Alceste has an admirer of his own, the prudish spinster Arsinoé, who ardently schemes to expose Célimène’s affairs to turn Alceste against her and win his heart, but all this farcical bombast only adds to Alceste’s disgust at himself and all of humankind.
