This is one of the videos that work as a link between the moving and still images’ sections of the project “I can hear you now” that I am creating for my MA Photography at Falmouth University.
For my “Scream Score Experiment #1” (video available on this Vimeo page) I asked Elena Maro, the Italian music composer based in Los Angeles I collaborated with for both videos, to re-create in music the emotional process my sitters undertake while I portray them screaming, in order to demonstrate that their emotions can become audible using film score technique underlining and recreating their feelings. In this second collaborative visual experiment her music gives voice to what the subject is feeling while escaping her memories but, at the same time, provides her narration of the story, her artistic interpretation.
This video is part of a series of moving and still images named “Behind a scream” that aim to depict those stories behind those screams that represent the main body of work created for this project.
Those screams serve to distress negative emotions or memories, feelings generated by grief, occurrences, psychological and social problems that affect our everyday life: these images, at the same time, want to narrate what’s behind those externalizations.
The sequence of photographs provide the sense of multiple perspectives: the sitter’s one, who believes to know where those memories following her are; memories’ one, who spy and chase the woman from a hidden corner on the top-right of the first section of the staircase and viewers’ viewpoint, who are forced to follow and chase the sitter running away from them thanks to the movements of images on the screen.
Several symbols are insert into this video: the white dress, representing a purity to defend, that almost recalls the Roman vestals’ ones; the hand of light, appearing when the woman turn left, realising that there are more hidden memories ready to “grab” her dress; the final shadow, that swallows her own shadow and figure in the same moment in which we hope she is safe; the music itself, that represents her voice and personal narration.
“No matter how fast I was running, my memories were everywhere… Following me… Chasing me…”
This is a story that starts but that does not end. The audience must continue it in their minds, becoming part of the creative process once again and empathizing with the individual represented.
