"Reaching the Surface" (2010), excerpts
This project explores the way our community views HIV/AIDS today, the stigma that is created when one fears the unknown. Labeling faceless people is easy, but when an audience is confronted with dancers both HIV+ and advocates for the cause, it's difficult to be so dismissive. This "Reaching the Surface" excerpt begins with "I Got It," which focuses on the internal dialogue of a dancer who has recently learned of his HIV+ status and his will to continue living a meaningful life. Topics such as status disclosure, infection from infidelity, medical expenses and treatment cost, and hope for change are also discussed in this excerpt.
"You don't need to be infected to be affected."
"Reaching the Surface" was made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, along with the City of North Miami and production sponsorship of ALERT Health, Inc.
