A silent laneway projection for the Cairns Changing Lanes project: May - October 2011. The audio has been created solely for the web version by Hatstand Pincer Movement and Annaliese Ciel Walker.
Overlaid on a mangrove swamp, situated in a tropical monsoon climate and with an ever-fragile economy, the city of Cairns inadvertently coexists with elements of change. As we understand globally, modern human activity has had an adverse impact on climate change, and consequentially, the environmental elements of change we experience as a community.
This silent projection features a boy, who represents the soul of the city. Essentially bound by the walls and buildings, he spends the night interacting and playing within these limits. The boy’s journey is influenced by elements of change that represent, in an abstract way, the evolution of the city. Through sun, wind, water and lightning, the journey changes and the boy adapts; he pushes his boundaries and fills the wall with images and scenes only to watch them fall victim to the elements of change.
Carbon offsets were obtained to ensure the projection was carbon neutral.
