Beacon Hill Academy is a San Antonio public school that serves a 95% Hispanic population of, currently, 415 students from pre-K through 7th grade; next year the district plans to add 8th grade. 50% of the students are considered ‘at-risk’ for dropping out of school. 85% of their families live below the poverty line.
Beacon Hill Academy's mentoring program is largest similar initiative in the San Antonio Independent School District system. Thanks to a long-term partnership with University Presbyterian Church, a nearby faith community, Beacon Hill has an 11 year history of pairing volunteer adults with these children. With 33 mentors currently participating -- many having stayed with the same child as he/she ages -- the program models excellence addressing insecurities that cause children’s poor school performance.
I, Catherine Lee, have been a mentor at Beacon Hill Academy for many years. I asked The Puffin Foundation for funding to create this PSA to recruit more mentors, especially bilingual ones. Videographer James Sanders and community activist Carol Mendoza Fisher helped me create this piece in 2017. I'm grateful to The Puffin Foundation and to the many folks associated with Beacon Hill, for your enthusiasm in making this video possible.
