I started this video several weeks ago initially as a response to fellow musician and Vimeo member Jeff Duke who produced a video of his oud playing in response to my encouragement to him in discovering the instrument.
I sat down one Sunday morn and recorded an oud improvisation. Along the way and throughout this recent fall that has begun turning to winter in NY, I had been shooting video for a documentary on my neighborhood of Park Slope here in Brooklyn. Initially not totally about local nature or the Park, I thought about much of my recent shooting and the tonal range of the music and I decided to bring much of the local fall footage I had shot together with this performance turning it into the video's soundtrack.
The title of the piece comes more from the Zen when a guitar teacher of mine many years ago, Frederic Hand, suggested the term to me in an attempt to get me to relax more in a particular piece of music. As the years have passed I've learned the value of 'Fall Still' and felt it was fitting to be the title for a piece which on the other side is all about the seasonal fall here in Brooklyn.
Though with many years here now I do feel bit settled in NY, more so than I felt possible a few years ago but it is not my native home, that being Arkanas where I lived till the early 90's.
Stories seem to be encouraged here on Vimeo so let me add that I learned a great deal on the technical while editing this piece. This one as my others posted here I have done in Premiere with this one being the most robust. I initially finished it about a week ago and everytime I attempted the QT export it was erroring out to the point that I figured okay corrupt section or clip. In trying to work through I wound up starting all over again and in the end orchestrated the clips different and more contrasting themes. I also moved the project to a slightly faster processor which seemed to do the trick.
In response to Jeff's spirit and playing of the oud and music I dedicate Fall Still to him as a tip of the hat to his lovely oud video at vimeo.com/2319456.
