Special Springs is trusted designer, manufacturer and distributor of nitrogen gas springs, a tool used in many manufacturing facilities, particularly in the automobile industry. Nitrogen gas springs use compressed air to withstand very high external forces. They can resist anywhere from 10 pounds to 22 tons. This makes them very useful but the intensely compressed air also makes them potentially dangerous for the people who have to work around them.
Special Springs is unique amongst it's competitors in that it works hard to develop products with advanced safety features. The safety animation is meant to succinctly explain why nitrogen gas springs in use can possibly be destructive and why, the manufactures who purchase the springs should take care to note the safety features of the springs they use, if, they even have any. Part PSA, part explanatory video, the safety animation educates it's audience to dangers that not even the consumers were aware they faced.
Special Springs is an Italian company but has it's North American headquarters in Plymouth, Michigan. Working with Special Springs North America, Kohlitz learned the challenges Special Springs faces in the American market in educating their customers to the dangers. In Europe, the safety springs are mandated by almost all German carmakers, making it standard with many European countries. However, the US carmakers don't require the same and the manufacturers, even the safety engineer on staff, frequently aren't aware of the risk.
With this information Kohlitz wrote the script, created the graphics, used existing CAD models of one of the gas springs and animated the safety animation all to great effect. Special Springs plans to send the animation to those in charge of safety who use such gas springs.
