In the Finding Our Wings program, the media captured by the girls is being organized into a documentary format that also includes footage captured by graduate and undergraduate mentors, as well as by Kirsten D'Andrea Hollander, director of the program. The Wings program is as much about the mentors spreading their wings to embrace the wisdom that the teen girls offer as it is about the ultimate goal to enrich the lives of the girls. All contributors take responsibility for the footage captured and what they feel is important to show. The bottom line is what the Wings girls feel most strongly about including in the community documentary.
The Documentary to emerge from this program will be shown in the Baltimore City Public School System via invitation of the YMCA of Central Maryland Urban Services, in order to inspire other students to take the initiative to graduate high school and go to college. It is important to know that there is a greater than 60 percent dropout rate from high school in the East Baltimore Community. The Wings community documentary program is slated to see the current participating girls through their high school graduations in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The documentary will need to be screened in various stages of completion to meet our goals for outreach.
