This is a short excerpt of a mototaxi ride from Jakmel into the rural mountain communities outside the city in southeastern Haiti. Large heaps of trash burn in the background on the outskirts of Jakmel because the country lacks infrastructure. Cattle, pigs, and goats graze through the garbage with ropes hanging from their necks as they are tied to nearby palms. The saltwater inlet allows people to wash themselves, clothes, and vehicles. Many people carry goods for miles from up the rigorous, dirt, mountain road to go to the market or fetch clean water. Occasional donkeys help lighten the load.
