John and Mary Beth Tinker

New Hampshire Public Radio

John and Mary Beth Tinker are two of the most important characters in 1st Amendment history. Their quiet protest of the Vietnam War led to a landmark Supreme Court case, Tinker v Des Moines, which determined the free speech rights of students in American public schools.

The Tinkers came to NH to attend an event hosted by the New Hampshire Humanities Council named: The First Amendment in Public Schools: You Don't Lose Your Rights at the Schoolhouse Gate.

In the day preceding the event, the Tinkers visited Milford High School and spoke with students about their case.
