"Raised 3 hours south. Migrated to SF because I was kicked out of my radically conservative Baptist community because I was gay."
My project was inspired by a young homosexual man called Josh I met in Castro, San Francisco.
Josh told me 'his story', in fact he volunteered it, out of the blue. He said had also been removed from his family's will.
In my animation, the figure represents the family as a body, a whole. The figure precedes to remove his arm on realisation that a member has come out as gay.
"So if your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away."
To reject a family member out for such reasons is wrong, and ironic I think. If they were attempting to remove 'shame', or whatever they considered it brought to their family, they have shamed themselves. But everyone may decide for themselves whether it is stupid or not.
