Opening address from Mrs. Evelyne Alfonsi, Principal, Gerald McShane Elementary.

Since the beginning of the year your children have been involved in a school-wide literacy project which required them to interview a grandparent or a senior they know and create two pieces of writing in French and two in English based on the person they interviewed.

Throughout the year we've invited grandparents and seniors from the community to knit story bags. On two occasions grandmothers come to the school to knit and sew bags and, over a period of several months, a group of ladies from the community center knitted over 100 bags.

To celebrate this wonderful endeavour in which so many people were involved, parents and grandparents were invited to a celebration on Thursday, June 9th, 2011. As part of the celebration, students performed a song for their grandparents and parents. Some students read their stories and a movie was shown highlighting the project. Every child received a souvenir copy of the movie on DVD.
