As a brand, It’s fair to say here at Stitches + Steel we’ve always kept van life flexible; while the van first and foremost has always been a home away from home and a means to escape, it has also had to meet the demands of daily life. As we’ve forged our path it’s become even more important that the van can well and truly meet the work/ life/ adventure balance.
Shifting our attention to valuing the experience itself on the road, rather than the objects that made it possible. We needed to move towards simple, well thought out ideas, taking away rather than adding.
First and foremost we use our vans is to explore and escape and get outside, to find the feeling of freedom. This small contemporary moving space needed materials that worked with the environments we find ourselves in. With this focus on travelling light, on less is more, on utilising outside space, on being outside rather than in, the conversion was born.
WE'VE SEARCHED TIRELESSLY TO FIND THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO WORK WITH FOR THIS PROJECT WHICH CONSEQUENTLY BROUGHT US TO LEADERS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE FIELDS. THIS, IN TURN HAS LEAD TO US USING THE BEST POSSIBLE MATERIALS WHILE OVERCOMING BIG HURDLES WITH INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS.
We've used materials more often associated with the aviation industry and open ocean yacht racing, disciplines where strength, weight saving, longevity and smart storage were paramount.
We digitised all 63 shapes that make up the interior floor by utilising laser technology. The outcome was a CNC cut seamless modular unit. It was a similar story for the hardware. The array of pulleys, blocks and cleats for the suspended carbon bed are considered innovative even in sailing circles. The rope that hoists the double bunk? Dyneema core Maffioli; commonly used as lifelines in the climbing industry. All the bolts and hardware are marine grade stainless steel; the carbon fibre components, all prepreg and 100% pure. The draw runners are identical to the ones purposed for fire truck appliances housing their emergency cutting gear. The floor carcass can be specified in two materials both incredibly light, eco friendly and, of course, waterproof.
This is a new look at what can be done with a small moving space. We’re excited to be in the position to begin our tester programme. We’re offering the conversions to a range of testers who will push the design in its current guise to the limits over the coming year, ultimately contributing to a better, even more thought out space.
