"Over the past five months popular uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya have captured our attention as never before. The world is witnessing the struggle of the North African people as they fight for freedom and democracy. They are striving for political and social change, and an end to dictatorship.
At the core of the revolutions is the determination of the people to take their future into their own hands. The sheer number of images streaming out of North Africa taken by citizens attests to the fact that we live in a newly transparent world where media can no longer be controlled by governments. At the same time, photojournalists continue to fearlessly document this upheaval with an experienced eye. Their images are powerful and revealing.
By organizing this projection of photographs under the Manhattan Bridge Archway, we have created a unique forum to bring together this spectrum of photographs. We all are witnesses to North Africa's struggle."
