Carbon Studies III, the third of a series of vignettes shot in Berlin in the summer of 2010, is a lyrical piece with a tone of vulnerable transcendence. It is informed by Berlin’s unignorable history.
Berlin residents walk with brightly colored plastic bags down a quiet street. Compact cars turn around in a cul-de-sac. A gardener dressed in a blue work suit wheels a cart.
These street scenes are bisected by a strip of paper onto which an inverted live image is projected by a handheld concave mirror. At times, the shot is inverted so the projection is upright, the street scene inverted.
The strip dividing east and west is broken by a bright portal into a mysterious version of the world. The people seem toylike as they step into this strange portal.
