Thanks to some input from my wife (She handles all the graphics of the game) and a new friend, Jayant Varma from OZ Apps, I'm going to try to go with rotating the ship according to the touch pad input instead of a button click. This takes advantage of the natural expectation of using the touch interface instead of relying on buttons. Currently everything works just fine, the ships only move in 45 degree increments per our game design (this may change later) and orients itself towards the players touch. You can see it on this short video. It's a bit crappy quality since I had the simulator running in half screen, but it does also highlight the creepy alien chatter in the game.
