This is a visual interpretation of Carmel Wallace's extraordinary art piece for a Regional Arts Victoria project, "Illuminated by Fire". Original score by Michael Wallace.
Carmel worked with her local community to produce this work, referencing the emigrant ship New Zealander that burnt to the waterline in Portland harbour in 1853. The hull form is filled with giant sculptural interpretations of Mellblom’s Spider Orchid, flora indigenous to Portland and dependent on fire for survival.
The video will be shown (and the burning of the ship restaged) at the Melbourne premiere in Federation Square from June 30 - July 2 as part of The Light in Winter festival. rav.net.au/storyboard
