Playblasts from houdini viewport.
I implemented the Cuda SDK smoke particles sample for the self shadowing.
In the video above, the first sample runs at 10 fps on my GTX460 (around 2 millions particles). It can run in real time by lowering settings/particles count a bit.

Else I added a secondary particles system which can be rendered as trails (only additive blending for now). This runs in real time.
Also added basic hardware sprite rendering, and attractors.

September 2012 update : finally brought the Maya version mostly up to date and released binaries and code.

Remember, this was a learning project for me and is more a tech demo than a proper production ready tool!
