As we continue to look for ways to increase flexibility and reduce time to market, the evolution and transition to digital print is showing promise. However, managing the process of getting the final design to print has still not caught up. Approvals, prepress, print and converting are still following the vendor specific process flows, limiting file exchange across multiple prodcution vendors. The use of PDF in the commercial print and publishing market is now ubiquitous and supports the latest digital print and finishing processes. Following years of research, development and standardization, we are closer to a standardized framework for PDF that helps define settings, rules and workflows. This enables a single PDF that can support the needs of the whole graphic chain including Design, Brand Management, Prepress, Print, and Converting.
