In 1939, Velma Demerson was just 18 years old, when a love story with her Chinese boyfriend Harry Yip turned tragic. Her father, outraged that she would marry a Chinese man, had her arrested and put in jail for one year for being "Incorrigible" under the Ontario Female refuges act.
Velma’s story is about the resiliency of the human spirit and the justice which has evaded women for decades under the hands of powerful men. Up until the age of 98, Velma continued to seek justice for thousands of women who were arrested under the female refuges act even though the Ontario and Federal Government refused to acknowledge this historical wrong.
