AS SUCH, OR NOT is a structured improvisational practice. The work is malleable; each dancer’s interests/strengths/questions join together to form the infrastructure of the piece. Originally commissioned for the University of Illinois- Urbana-Champaign’s November Dance Concert at Krannert Center for the Arts (2017), the work was intended for six dancers; it has been performed with as many as 7, as little as 4. Sometimes there are walk on roles, for guests and friends. It is best when there is a musician that also functions as a dancer. AS SUCH, OR NOT is meant to open the show- or be performed after an intermission; this allows for the dancers to be on stage, playfully assembling themselves and the drum kit. A slow opening to the work is integral; as it readies the audience for what will transpire. Over the course of 10 minutes, the dancers assemble a drum kit and themselves, play the drum kit/pass through solos and trios and group phrases/disassemble the drum kit and exit from the stage.
