Matt Gordon is a physicist and software engineer. He and his art group Hydrocarbon Collective produced Torch Song, a 15' kinetic fire art sculpture that they brought to Burning Man in 2017. It was his first grant-funded art piece, and the largest and most complex piece he has ever attempted by an order of magnitude. He will give a tour of the structure, mechanism, control, safety and reliability considerations involved in Torch Song. In addition he will discuss the learning process involved in producing new, novel and complex art from the standpoint of a generalist, and the process of learning to learn how to make things in general.
