"Street Miracles" tells the story of Marc Washington, a young drug dealer, who finds himself in prison on Riker's Island. Because of the large population of teenagers in the prison, Riker's has a high school "Island Academy."
A non-profit group "Friends of Island Academy," based in NY, visits the prison frequently in an effort to get kids, when released, to come to their program for counseling, jobs, etc. Marc Washington was one of those "kids" and turned his life around. Now, aspiring to become a lawyer and working with "Friends of Island Academy" he counsels kids who, like him, need guidance once out of prison.
I edited this piece that aired on 20/20 and it received an Emmy nomination. More importantly, after the piece aired, the federal government gave "Friends of Island Academy" a 2 million dollar grant to expand their program to several other cities in the US.
