Inspired by the autobiography of Goethe, this video sets into motion an enigmatic shadow to a soundtrack of pulsating music. The doppelganger is a gently gyrating vulnerable body, an instance of uncanniness where attraction, repulsion, the missing, the disappeared and the erotic meet.
In his autobiography Goethe wrote of a doppelganger of himself which walked to meet his loved one one last time. I wanted to convey the feeling of meeting one's double as a fleeting residual image left on the atmosphere of a place like an old film. With this video, I explore loss and absence and culture’s persistent association of new electronic media with paranormal phenomena, technical obsolescence with nostalgia, anxiety and the erotic.
On a technical note, through editing, I rendered the image as a vertical portrait frame.
With this image of a gently gyrating vulnerable body, I set forth to capture such intangibles as attractions, repulsion, the missing, the disappeared and the erotic.
