"I don't make music for the masses to dance to, I make music for the small majority that listens." -Kenny Dixon Jr. (aka MoodyMann)
Moodymann is one of the most inspiring House producers of all time. He is definitely a genius and one of the most outspoken voices in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music. Moodymann is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre's origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned. Utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster. Moodymann is one of the few electronic artists to create great sketches of music that translate into emotional albums that may not be easily digested but will certainly stand the test of time.
I have been a long time fan of Moody’s hybrid form of techno/house dance music. There have been many attempts to have Moodyman dj in LA but it has never quite come to pass. Mike and I were fortunate to attend two of his three highly anticipated dj performances. This video is a personal homage to one of the best soulful house producers. Moodymann is in a league of his own.
