This video tutorial shows how to wrap a flat modelled leather bracer onto a wrist nurbs geometry. The bracer is shaped using the nurbs surface. The paint tool is used to apply thickness and displacement maps that demonstrate how to work in UVN nurbs space. The tutorial shows many paint specific features like display options, display and adjustment of map value display clipping and much more.
Unfortunately this video still does not show how deep the Surface Deformer integrates into Maya's construction history. You can at any time toggle the "intermediate" flag of the original geometry off and start editing it, e.g. to insert or delete edges, move components around, add new geometric detail, etc.
Since maps are painted and stored within the Surface Deformer you can at any time replace the base nurbs surface and the deformed geometry and still maintain every map you painted.
In addition all effects are cumulative. This means you can paint a thickness map, add a thickness texture node network on top and control thickness with the global factor attribute.
