“Point and Shoot”
In 1994, South African photojournalist, Kevin Carter, committed suicide shortly after receiving a Pulitzer Prize for the unsettling photo he took in Sudan, Africa of a starving child about to become prey to a hungry vulture. Carter was questioned repeatedly whether or not he saved the child in the photograph. Carter did no such thing and was reportedly consumed by the guilt created by his constant reminder, the image in the photograph, and the fame he gained from that very image. In LaBonte’s video she repeatedly photographs the image created by Carter, indirectly using the camera as a weapon. The sound of the camera’s shutter creates an eerie sound similar to a gun shot. The video questions the power of photography and the relationship between photographer and the photographed.
