Manhattan Repertory Theatre presents
White Castle Valentine’s Day 2018
By Sophia Valera Heinecke and Jack “Leroy” Kyser
Directed by Jack Kyser
When Sophia and Jack stumbled into a White Castle for a late-night soda less than a month ago, neither of them could imagine that they'd leave ten minutes later with a potential short play percolating in their minds. Written over the course of a single weekend and reflecting the whims and idiosyncrasies of both writers, White Castle Valentine's Day 2018 arrives near the one-year anniversary of Jack and Sophia's relationship. While this piece doesn't exactly reflect their love story in any real way, it's still a representation of their ideas and concerns, filled with generous helpings of bizarre humor and non-sequiturs. In the spirit of this holiday, you're invited to discover what it means to accept your romantic partner (flaws and all) in White Castle Valentine's Day 2018.
Trash Lord - Nadira Foster-Williams
Nadira Foster-Williams began her life's calling as an actress in the void between the quiet suburbs and bestirring urban pavements of Northern New Jersey. An energetic and emotionally intuitive entity, Nadira's career was affirmed and catalyzed by her winning a scholarship at the Susan Batson Studio on January 1, 2015 for her commitment and devotion to telling stories. Devotion being a work of heart. A lifelong child, dreamer, and "powerhouse" with an awesome penchant for intimate detail, Nadira can best be understood by her name, which in its pure Arabic root means, "rare and unusual gift."I am a soul having a human existence, invested in the glory of expressing and living the everyday elation and heartache we have awakened to call our life here on earth.
Vincent - Zachary Gamble
Zachary Gamble is thrilled to be making his Broadway debut.
Gloria - Audrey Harris
After receiving two life sentences, Audrey Harris was released on parole in June of 2017. During her incarceration she found solace in writing and acting, tools which were essential in convincing the judge to release her. It's safe to say Audrey has learned her lesson and now stays two steps in front of the law. Her artistic and criminal accomplishments leave little doubt that one day the world will know the name Audrey Harris.
Gene - Jack “Leroy” Kyser
Jack Kyser is a 2013 graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he was a Dean's Scholar and film major. He is currently in post-production on his new film Harvey’s Last Night on the Avenue, and works as a web video editor at Comedy Central for The Daily Show. Previously, he worked as an associate producer and assistant editor for Emmy-winning filmmaker Nancy Buirski, and interned for a year-and-a-half at Martin Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions. In addition to writing, directing and performing in numerous short films, he recently starred in the feature film Blood and Thunder. He’s thrilled to return to the stage in collaboration with his number one friend-o, the effervescent playwright Sophia Heinecke.
Sophia Valera Heinecke (Playwright) has received a grant from the Kevin Spacey Foundation, followed shortly by the John Golden Award for Playwriting, and the Issac Kwock Award for Social Justice. Her work, Trash Lord: Domestication, will be produced by The Upstream Artists’ Collective in April. She’s constantly surprised by the ways in which her romance with director Jack Kyser allow her to expand her goals and rectify her moral compass. She would like to dedicate this play to her Grandma, whose birthday is February 14th and to Rick Baker. sophiavaleraheinecke.com
Huge thanks to our production designer and project advisor, Madeline Wall. Her brilliance has illuminated the work of both Jack’s films and Sophia’s theater productions, and we would like to tell the world how much we love her - she is the Valentine of Valentine's Day. Thank you to Jack Heinecke for his compassion and uncanny recreation of the White Castle Valentine's Day 2018 poster for our publicity materials; Jasmin James for additional publicity materials and insight into craver culture; and Ken Wolf and Jennifer Pierro for being so accommodating to our questions. We are #blessed to be putting our love and work on display with at Manhattan Rep.
