CATADORES/SCAVENGERS is a site-specific video installation with live narration and music performance, documenting a Portuguese convent where Jews and other targeted outsiders were tortured by the Church and State during the Inquisition.
The video projection component incorporates a 40ft x 20ft projection of (1) a 1,100-inch digital scan of my original photographic film negative created on-site using a Spanish military camera manufactured by Francisco Franco's Fascist dictatorship; (2) field recordings of frogs and crickets from the convent ponds; (3) my own original prose-poem text in English documenting the site.
The performance component incorporates (1) live reading of the text in Portuguese by Rafael Liebich; (2) live performance of original music by composers Veronika Krausas and David Rosenboom.
This project was installed at MiMoDa Studio in Los Angeles as part of the MicroFest performance series through Cal Arts and UCLA. It has been commissioned for 2012 performance in Portugal at the Convento São Francisco de Mértola, where it will be projected within the convent cathedral.
This is an example of the kind of performance installation works that will form the core of MERCY KILLING AKTION: works that are equally at home in in-situ environments, as well as formal settings of gallery or performance space, or DVD- or web-based viewing.
