This is the first part of a tutorial about V-Ray and Blender.
Since a few years now it has been possible to render with V-Ray from within Blender by making use of the V-Ray for Maya Standalone version. Andrey Izrantsev has developed a great script, that will export your blendfile to the V-Ray scene format and then render it with V-Ray. But due to the nature of the old 2.49 Blender interface, we had to somehow translate the material and texture settings from V-Ray to Blender ourself.
But now, with the new version of Blender 2.5, the exporter is tightly integrated into the Blender Interface, thanks to the new and improved python API.
So this tutorial will show you how to install a custom build of Blender that includes the exporter script, some optimizations for faster mesh export and some extra features.
But especially on OSX and Linux installing V-Ray is not as easy as you might think it is, that's why this is covered as well.
And because these are really boring, yet important topics, we decided to release this as a free tutorial, before we publish the second part of the V-Ray to Blender tutorial, where you will learn everything that you need to master V-Ray and all the settings that you need to create stunning renders.
