I reflect on my Great-Grandfather Homer Joel French's work on the Empire State Building as a Mohawk iron worker at the top of the building. It was powerful being up so high, wondering what it was like to work up in the clouds with high winds & big drops below.
A huge tourist attraction for New York City, I saw no apparent recognition of Mohawk people's contributions & losses in the construction of this landmark. My ancestors, immigrants, native, people of color, built the industries of this Empire, America. We play(ed) powerful roles in the American play. Why then are we hardly visible on the playbill? Who are the editors, directors, funders? Who owns the theater? Who's show is it anyways?
This is why I tell my story & print a new playbill; re-writing the play. This is part of my story. What is your American story?
