The design of Sussex's new academic building is perfectly positioned to define a major new quadrangle on the campus, and provides a lively forecourt for the building itself - a wonderful new addition for the University, which will celebrate it's 50th birthday in September 2011.
The external space flows through into the interior, helping the occupants engage with the outside world. Ramps and stairs link the new court to the rest of the campus. The lecture theatre has a curved form, expressing its internal function and a sculptural reference to the Meeting House, Chichester Lecture Theatre and the Gardner Arts Centre. Pieces of sculpture enliven the external spaces and are positioned at key pivotal points opposite and alongside the main entrance and on the lecture theatre roof.
As well as providing for the needs of users, the design captures the essence of Sussex. It strengthens the wonderful relationship between built form, spaces between buildings, and landscape. We have created a design which uses the latest techniques to minimise its environmental impact, which is packed with creativity and exploits the latest technology to make a vibrant addition to the University.
