TD Ottawa Winter Jazz Fest 2018 Presents: Taps and Traps: Heather Cornell and Jesse Stewart Featuring: Heather Cornell - tap dance Jesse Stewart - drums Described by The Globe and Mail as “The Oscar Peterson of hoofing,” Heather Cornell (tap, wood, sand) is credited as one of the movers and shakers of the tap dance renaissance, a creator of concert tap and a leader in collaborating with world music and jazz. She tours extensively in the international music and dance scene. The Canadian-born, NYC-based, dancer/percussionist began her career in apprenticeship to six of the first generation of American tap masters with whom she had the honour of not only learning but also performing: Buster Brown, Eddie Brown, Harriet Browne, Cookie Cook, Steve Condos and Chuck Green. In addition, she was the only tap dancer mentored by the legendary bassist, Ray Brown, who was one of her most profound influences. For her Winter Jazzfest appearance, she will be joined by Ottawa percussionist Jesse Stewart who has been described as "one of the finest young drummers and percussionists on the scene today" (One Final Note) and “one of the most innovative musicians in Canada” (OttawaJazzScene.ca). In addition to the drum set, Stewart plays on a wide variety of unusual percussion instruments including many of his own design.
