Video from An Invisible City project, (after Italo Calvino) - Interdisciplinary Arts students at Idyllwild Arts Academy, Spring show 2011, (edited by Paul Waddell)
Invisible City : An Interdisciplinary Mind class project -
funding provided by Arts Enterprise Laboratory.
This project focused on an organic process, working together, embracing risk-taking, filming aspects of our practice, laughing, and discussing ideas. Using Italo Calvino’s incredible book,Invisible Cities, beginning IA students used the text as a base “material.” General explorations of our own internal worlds, our “invisible” landscapes provided the back-drop to our work with special guest teachers - -Theatre and Creative Writing faculty Abbie Bosworth, and Stephanie Gilliland from the Dance department.
Students then worked with complimentary ideas of memory, emotions, and dreamscapes. We combined elements to produce an installation- - consisting of several hanging panels, each one representing the emotions: Heartbreak, Passion, Ecstasy, and Iinsanity. Each panel was painted in groups after contemplating what shapes, tools, gestures, and music that highlighted their emotion. Filming this process provided a closer viewing and resulted in compelling footage to collage into video art, edited by Visual Arts faculty Paul Waddell. Original music was then added by some of our class composers, and several creative writers created work, fusing it with excerpts from Invisible Cities itself, to further shape our mysterious environment.
