Light carves out the world around us. It separates night from day, and its particles are always in motion. Recognizing these peculiarly architectural qualities of light, MADWORKSHOP partnered with the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio and FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano (the National Trust for Italy) to produce a studio. Led by architect and MADWORKSHOP Fellow Riccardo Blumer, the Light and Matter studio culminated in the ‘Light Theaters’ exhibition at the Villa Panza. The ten final student group projects used technology to interrogate the role of light in the pilgrimage experience of the Sacro Monte. In Varese, PLANE—SITE conducted interviews with MADWORKSHOP founders Mary Klaus Martin and David Martin, Riccardo Blumer, Foundation and FAI staff, and the design students to learn more.
