Crime and insecurity represent the main challenge to democratic governance in Central America. The region has a homicide rate of 32 per 100,000; a rate more than three times the world average and seven points higher than the rest of Latin America. This has led to the increased presence and reach of the armed forces. This discussion focused on what the consequences of this increased militarization means for the region.
