Part 1: Specific Programs. First distillate from The Complete Coverage rough cut. Selected for suggesting specific policies, programs, or perspectives that should be implemented by the City, rather than spending more to expand the police force. Boiled down to 16 proposals. Safe Zone North Surveillance Camera Network, Removing officers with a history of violent behavior, Residency requirements, Cultural competency requirements, Community-led initiatives for Restorative Justice, De-escalation training - with community members, and dismantling white supremacy. An elected Civilian Police Accountability Council with real power to enact community control of the MPD through budgets, discipline, and employment decision-making. Reconsider the dollars proposed to increase police and direct them toward the communities where those projected police would patrol. Invest in people and organizations that are already working for their communities. Hire more school counselors, and mental health workers to respond with, or instead of, police in situations where sending in skittish officers in body armor and a legal precedent license to kill, or maybe they are just following orders and doing their job.
