Step inside the classroom of Franco Scardino, a social studies teacher at Townsend Harris High School in Flushing, N.Y., as he uses IEEE REACH resources to introduce his students to the history of the printing press and related technologies. They learn about the interplay between the invention and adoption of the printing press, human actions, and social, economic, and political developments and change. Additionally, students draw parallels to the dissemination of information via the printed word in the fifteenth century to the dissemination of information through the means of social media today. The lesson highlights the processes of papermaking, typesetting, and operating a printing press. Students are shown how printing presses were used in the era of Johannes Gutenberg.
