2009 National Summit: Sustainable Globalisation - Human health and sustainability - What are the challenges for globalisation?

The 2009 National Summit "Sustainable Globalisation: Will it Survive the GFC?" critically examined the impact of the first global recession since World War II on long-standing issues concerning globalisation, including global governance, labour standards and corporate social responsibility as well as climate change and energy security. The Summit assessed in particular the role and the response of the US.

Human health and sustainability - What are the challenges for globalisation?


Pandemics like SARS and swine flu capture the world's attention. But public health issues like obesity in developed countries and AIDS in the developing world are greater killers. As life expectancy increases, health care costs seem destined to spiral out of control. The GFC is forcing belt tightening around the world. How can we achieve sustainability in human health?
